Anne Hathaway’s Most Iconic Outfits From The Witches

The Witches is out in cinemas and this might be the only way to truly enjoy some new Halloween 2020 vibes this year for many people around the world. It’s a remake of the 1990s adaptation and it looks like they took it to a whole new level with the costumes and the prosthetics. A lot of the details in Hathaway’s appearance are taken directly from the 1980s novel by Roald Dahl.

The hair is often backcombed to hide the horns, she shoes Anne wears in the movie are all custom made to look like she’s got square feet but she’s hiding them with pointy shoes. We don’t even want to know the number of hours she spent every day getting her makeup and prosthetics done for that bald head look and the three knuckle hand situation. But what we do want to talk about is her fabulous outfits.

Joanna Johnston was the costume designer on The Witches and she made sure that the character of The Grand High Witch, played by Anne Hathaway, was equal parts fabulous and terrifying. Her style in the movie goes through quite a transformation, starting from old Hollywood glam and ending in hardcore witchy apparel.

Anne Hathaway starts out in the movie in a very glamorous but ultimately “down to business” style suit. Black and white goosefoot jacket and skirt, a big hat, glasses – a classy look for the 60s. After all, the costume designer of the movie was also inspired by famous style icons and models from the 60s.

The baby pink coat with a massive bow and that hair is very reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe, who was also used as an inspiration by the costume designer. It’s cute yet sexy and so playful, especially since we know Anne’s character is anything but cute or naive.

This fabulous purple and gold outfit shows off the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood perfectly. The gold snake necklace, the dark purple figure-hugging dress, the sheer volume in that hair and the purple makeup with a dark red lip, it all screams witchy GLAM. This is probably our favourite look from the movie.

We also get a chance to see The Grand Witch when she’s alone in her room. This is how she looks when she’s relaxing. A blood-red nightgown, a turban to hide her bald head. Even when alone she still exudes power, style and status. Look at her jewellery, her matching pink gloves and shoes.

And towards the end of the movie, we get to see Anne Hathaway’s character look even more witchy. Her style becomes edgier, her clothes become darker, bigger hair, darker eye makeup with black lipstick. Her outfits start having those quintessential pointy bits. There’s no hiding or pretending anymore. She’s as witchy as one can get. We love it.
